Wellness Through The Eyes Of African Women- Dr. Diane Karusisi2 min read

MA: What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness for an African woman means allowing herself time for self-care. We have family, social duties, a career … There are many people in our lives expecting a lot from us but it is vital to find time to heal and take care of yourself.

I often tell women that if you don’t take care of yourself you can’t take care of those that matter to you. That can mean important relationships in your family but also in your business!

It’s simple but not always obvious … It is yourself that must be the foundation —how well you take care of your mental, physical and emotional well-being.

MA: Are you currently prioritizing your well-being … why and if yes how?

I am trying but I could certainly do better. I priotize taking time off as often as I can, shutting off from my kids and social demands. I feel more productive afterwards.

When I travel I always take one day off from my duties to reset. I rest, read or even watch a series. I focus on self-care; my mental, physical and emotional well-being. That time is precious and makes me feel better about what is to follow next day.

MA:What can we do to make financial wellness a reality for all?

It’s all about healthy budgeting. This includes your rent, food, transport and everything else. I believe most people can save, even if it is as little as USD 100 per month. When you put something aside, you will be able to afford to cater for your mental, physical and emotional needs.

It’s in everybody’s interest — in the interest of our society — that we emphasise this and educate women about the personal impact of financial wellness
