Name: Ms Hannah Githuki
Role: Personal Branding Coach
QN: What does wellness mean to you as an African woman? Do you prioritise it? If yes, how?
For me, wellness is my body feels good, I am energetic and healthy. I am eating balanced meals, sleeping enough and exercising. My mind is settled. I am emotionally stable. I recognize and can manage my emotions as well as control my thoughts. I am coping well with life. I can manage stressful situations without panic.
I am not constantly worried.
I love who I am. I am not trying to find validation from others.
Wellness means to me that I can give love to others. I am maintaining a social life.
I can ask for help from others when I need to. I am not afraid to say I don t know.
I can cry and it is okay. I make friendships and I commit to growing them. I maintain boundaries but also allow my family and friends to come to me for support.
Wellness means I have a relationship with God. I rest in His goodness. I have hope for the future. I k now why I exist. I have a sense of purpose and I know I was created for a reason. I pray and trust.
Wellness to me also means I am working to make sure I have money to take care of myself and my family. I don’t live beyond my means, and I don’t waste money. I am helping another person as well. this is wellness to me.
I prioritize wellness. It’s number 1 on my list.
I prioritize by eating well, sleeping enough.
Exercising, talking to others and socializing. Saving and investing money. Praying.
QN: Any wellness practices passed down to you that you are keen on passing on yourself?
My mom always told me. Have your own money! Because having my own money gives me a sense of financial security. It gives me financial wellness. It doesn’t matter how much my husband has. I will always make and have my own money.
I have seen financial abuse from spouses. It causes stress. I protect myself from it.
My mom always prayed during good and tough times. God Is my anchor as well. My mom taught me this. It provides me with wellness.
My dad passed the exercising on to me. He still exercises at the age of 73. I know that’s why he’s so healthy. I do it as well. For my wellness and health.
I will pass these on to my children as well. And others who will sit under me.
QN: What has been your biggest lesson/realisation about wellness?
That it is very important.
That only you can give it to yourself. No one can do it for you.
That if you don’t make it a priority, one day you will be forced to. It might be too late when that happens.
Things don’t just happen. If you see healthy people? They have worked on it. I must work on it as well.
